How to Make a Ceramic Balloon – Complete Step-by-Step Guide

This process takes around 15 hours from start to finish, excluding cooling times. Follow the detailed steps below, and make sure to watch the video for additional guidance on each stage.

Materials Needed:

Clay
Inflated Balloon
Slip (clay mixed with water)
Smoothing Tools (sponge, rubber kidney)
Needle Tool
Kiln (for firing)
Glaze
Metallic Glaze
Paint (optional)
Cloth Ribbon (for finishing)

Step 1: Sculpt the Clay Around the Balloon

Begin by inflating the balloon to your desired size. Then, roll out the clay to an even thickness of about ¼ inch. Gently wrap the clay around the balloon, smoothing it out to create a hollow shape. Make sure to blend the seams with slip to join the clay evenly.

Important: Don’t pop the balloon at this stage. Allow the clay to dry completely, which could take several hours. If you pop the balloon too soon, the clay will collapse into mush.

Step 2: Allow to Dry

Let the clay-covered balloon dry thoroughly. You must wait until the clay is completely dry before moving on. Rushing this step can ruin the shape and integrity of the balloon.

Step 3: Bisque Fire

Once dry, place the clay balloon into the kiln for a bisque firing at cone 06. This firing takes about 8 hours. After firing, allow the piece to cool in the kiln for 24 hours before handling.

Step 4: Paint the Balloon (Optional)

Once the bisque is cool, you can apply three coats of paint to your ceramic balloon if you want a more colorful finish before glazing. Allow each coat to dry before moving to the next one.

Step 5: Glaze Fire

After painting, the ceramic balloon undergoes a glaze firing. This firing will take 8 to 10 hours, depending on your kiln and the type of glaze you’re using. After the glaze fire, let the piece cool for 24 hours in the kiln before handling it again.

Step 6: Apply Metallic Glaze

Once cooled, you can add a metallic glaze for a shiny finish. Fire the balloon again for about 3 hours to set the metallic glaze. After this firing, allow another 24-hour cooling period in the kiln.

Step 7: Final Touches

After the balloon has fully cooled, take it out of the kiln and do any finishing touches. Wrap a cloth ribbon around the balloon and prepare it for hanging. Your ceramic balloon is now complete and ready for display!
